What is an Expat? What is an American Expat?

An expat is the same thing as an expatriate. 'Expat' is most commonly a British word, but because it is a proper word meaning being voluntarily absent from your home country, we use the terms expat and American expat to describe Americans retiring abroad. Being an American expat does not mean you have abandoned your loyalty towards America. It does mean you don't live there anymore.
