   Spain is hugely popular as a vacation spot for Europeans, so naturally it is also a very popular country in which to retire. Spain is now a fairly high cost country using the Euro currency, so Spain, like most of Europe, should only be considered by wealthier retirees. There appears to be a trend that Europeans, particularly people from Britain, already retired in Spain, are selling their properties and moving to more affordable countries, such as Thailand and Bulgaria.

Still, there is no country quite like Spain, and many people are set on it, so if that's you, there is a way to make an application to retire there. The application process sounds a bit painful and it can take as long as four months for you to get the OK.
